If you want to operate commercial drones in Australia, as an individual, you will need to conduct drone training to obtain a Remote Pilot Licence (RePL). The RePL allows the holder to operate a drone commercially anywhere in Australia. The remote Pilot Licence is perpetual and does not require renewal.

Training to obtain a Remote Pilot Licence (RePL)
Aviassist’s RePL training is designed to equip professionals in their field with a new tool to capture information/imagery safely and efficiently. Competent delivery of training content is an essential component of training, but the ability to make a foreign concept simple while instilling some good aviation safety culture sets AviAssist apart.
Aviation professionals conduct Aviassist’s RePL training with a piloted aircraft background and extensive experience. The Aviassist team have over 29 000 hours of RPAS instruction and 24 000 hours of piloted aviation experience. Instructors have been trained in best aerial acquisition techniques, and content is delivered via a leading online learning management system. Ipads provided during the course are equipped with all the tools required for a thorough but enjoyable course.
The Remote Pilot Licence is conducted over five days, with three days of theoretical and two days of practical training.
The theory component of the course can be conducted via our “Online Live” virtual classroom or in-person at one of our training venues around Australia. Aviassist also reserves over 100 custom course dates a year and will travel to you for groups of three participants or more.
Practical training is conducted in-person using the fleet of Aviassist training aircraft. Aviassist can provide licensing on Multirotor, Fixed Wing and Powered Lift platforms.
- Multirotor training is conducted using DJI Phantom 4 and DJI Matrice 600 aircraft
- Fixed Wing training is conducted using Sensefly Ebee aircraft.
- Powered Lift training is conducted using the Wingtra and Quantum Systems Trinity aircraft
Access to up to date course material is provided for 12 months with the ability to download an eBook at any time. Through the online learning management system support is offered to students post-training.
Aviassist courses are all-encompassing and include; an Aeronautical Radio Operators Certificate, all CASA fees and the submission of all CASA paperwork on your behalf. Aviassist’s objective is to ensure graduates are job-ready.

Your initial Remote Pilot Licence will see you licensed for Multirotor up to 25kg. Once you have obtained your initial Remote Pilot Licence (RePL), the RePL can be amended to include other weight classes or aircraft types.

The requirement to operate under a Remote Operator Certificate (ReOC)
Once you have obtained your Remote Pilot Licence (RePL), you will be required to operate under Remote Operator Certificate (ReOC). The initial Remote Pilot Licence Multirotor up to 25kg, is the starting point for commercial drone use in Australia. The initial course is scheduled over five days, including both a theory and practical component.

Once scheduled, courses run regardless of final student numbers. Course pricing is available on the course dates page. Scheduled courses can be booked online or via our friendly team.
Custom courses
Aviassist reserves a significant number of weeks a year for custom courses. Custom courses can be requested for groups of three or more anywhere in Australia. A nominal fee of $1000 is applied per instructor for a custom course to cover travel expenses. One instructor can accomodate a maximum of five students and multiple instructors can be allocated to a course.

Remote Pilot Licence Multirotor up to 150kg requirement
Operating a Multirotor drone between 25kg and 150kg commercially requires a Remote Pilot Licence for the specific drone type. The Remote Pilot Licence Multirotor up to 25kg must be held prior to obtaining the Remote Pilot Licence Multirotor up to 150kg.
On completion of the drone-specific upgrade, you will be issued with a Remote Pilot Licence for Multirotor up to 150kg with a restriction to the drone type conducted during the upgrade. For example, a Remote Pilot Licence Multirotor up to 150kg restricted to DJI T40 (MTOW up to 101kg).

Gaining experience
Operations of a Medium Category Multirotor up to 150kgs are permitted without a Remote Pilot Licence for the specific type of drone or a Remote Operator Certificate provided that:
- The Remote Pilot holds a Remote Pilot Licence for the Category of drone to be operated (Multirotor/Powered Lift/ Fixed Wing/ Helicopter)
- The purpose of the drone operation is to gain practical experience on drone type for the purpose of a flight test.
Landowner rule
Drone operations may be conducted under the “landowner rule” without the requirement for a Remote Operator Certificate. A Remote Pilot Licence for the specific drone type is still required. To meet the landowner rule:
- The drone must be operated by the owner of the drone (or a person operating on behalf of the owner)
- Operated over land owned or occupied by the drone owner
- No renumeration received for the drone operation
- Operations are limited to the standard operating conditions
Best practice is to operate under a Remote Operator Certificate which allows for drone operations to be better managed and scaled. Operations under a Remote Operator Certificate also allows operations outside of the standard operating conditions such as Swarming or Beyond Visual Line of Sight.
Multirotor up to 150kg Train and Test vs Test Only
Aviassist offers two pathways to complete the Remote Pilot Licence for Multirotor up to 150kg:
- Train and Test using Aviassist’s fleet of drones
- Test only using your own drone
Multirotor up to 150kg Train and Test vs Test Only
Training and Testing for Multirotor up to 150kg is scheduled over one day and includes:
- A comprehensive briefing of the drone and sub-systems
- Competency-based training, including specialised operations for the drone type (e.g. spraying operations or sling loads)
- Flight test for the issue of a CASA Remote Pilot Licence for Multirotor up to 150kg.
Test Only
At a minimum, to obtain the Remote Pilot Licence for Multirotor up to 150kg, a flight test is required. For those with experience on the drone type, Aviassist schedules flight test days.
Flight tests are scheduled over two hours on your own drone. Proof of registration, insurance and full maintenance history is required.

Remote Pilot Licence Powered Lift up to 25kg
Powered Lift or Vertical Take-off and Landing drones are those that Take off and Land like a Multirotor drone then transition to a Fixed-wing drone for the operational phase of flight. Operating a Powered Lift drone (VTOL) requires a Remote Pilot Licence specifically for the Powered Lift Category. The Remote Pilot Licence for Powered Lift is usually conducted as an upgrade to an existing Remote Pilot Licence.
Aviassist schedules regular up to Remote Pilot Licence Powered Lift up to 7kg and up to 25kg Powered Lift drone training courses at our our drone training centres across Australia. Custom course dates and locations can also be arranged for groups of 3 or more.
Powered Lift up to 25kg upgrade from a different category
If you already hold a Remote Pilot Licence for another category (Multirotor/Fixed Wing/Helicopter), a two day drone training course will upgrade your Remote Pilot Licence to include Powered Lift up to 25kg.
The drone training course consists of a theory component and a practical component. The theory component covers the Powered Lift specific content. The practical training covers category-specific competencies in both Multirotor and Fixed Wing states as well as the transition between phases of flight.
Aviassist regularly schedules Remote Pilot Licence Powered Lift up to 25kg upgrade training courses in Brisbane, Newcastle and Melbourne. Custom dates and locations can be arranged.
Powered Lift up to 7kg upgrade from a different category.
Aviassist schedules Remote Pilot Licence Powerd Lift up to 7kg in two additional locations, Sydney and Perth.
Where drone training is conducted on a Powered Lift drone less than 7kg, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority places a restriction on your Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) to only allow operations up to 7kg.
Increasing weight from 7kg to up to 25kg in the Powered Lift category
If you already hold a Remote Pilot Licence for Powered Lift drones up to 7kg, upgrading to 25kg is reasonably straightforward. As the theory component of the Powered Lift category has been completed, only the practical competencies on the larger drone need to be completed. This can completed during any of our scheduled Powered Lift drone training and is usually completed within a day.
Powered Lift up to 25kg initial Remote Pilot Licence
Initial Remote Pilot Licence Powered Lift Powered Lift up to 25kg drone training courses is via custom booking request only. While it is possible to conduct the initial course on Powered Lift aircraft, we suggest getting some experience first through the Multirotor up to 25kg course.

Flight Crew Licence recognised prior learning for issue of Remote Pilot Licence
Flight Crew Licence holders hold recognised prior learning. A Part 61 Flight Crew licence holder is exempt from the theory component of Remote Pilot Licence training. Coming from an aviation background, Aviassist intimately understands the existing knowledge and has created a specific training pathway for Flight Crew holders.
Flight Crew training process for issue of Remote Pilot Licence
The pathway for Flight Crew Licence holders to obtain a Remote Pilot Licence is type training. The type training includes a practical training component and a practical flight test. The practical component requires a minimum time (5 hours) as well as competency items to be met. We schedule the practical sessions to allow us enough time to meet the flight hours which would usually see you complete the competency items as well. Any logged hours conducted previously can be counted towards the flight time requirement. Practical sessions are scheduled over 2 days.
